Samuel Doe the Unknown
Was he on the Upper Layer of the 3rd or the 7th Sky? Where on
this vast planet earth was him? Was he in the inner circle of
the lower region of the milky moon watching us with cold frozen
eyes? Was he in his hidden corner consulting the occult science
teachers as how to lighten his way with his ambitious plan of
upsetting the traditional order of things in our sleeping world?
Whatever might have been the case, we were unaware of his
existence and we could care less who he was and what he planned
to do.

Vamba Sherif’s Novel, Bound to Secrecy, Scheduled for
Publication in May 2010
By Nvasekie N. Konneh
January 12, 2010
In
my interview (AN INTERVIEW WITH DUTCH
LIBERIAN WRITER, VAMBA SHERIF ... ) with the Liberian
Dutch writer, Vamba Sherif, in 2006, he talked about his novels
which were published in Dutch. The Land of the Fathers, his
first novel, was a success in The Netherlands and was followed
by two more, making him by far the most successful and widely
read Liberian novelist outside of Liberia. For a man who grew up
in Liberia studying Arabic in madrassah and going to Kuwait on
scholarship to continue his studies, it can only be amazing that
he would write bestselling novels not in English, the lingua
franca of his home land, Liberia, nor Arabic, the language he
studied in school, but in Dutch, a language he did not grow up
speaking.

LIBERIA: Education and the Poverty Reduction Strategy
Francis W. Nyepon
January 8, 2010
Poverty is a severe injustice and an abuse of human rights,
especially for children. Liberia has had seven years of peace,
yet educational policies have had no meaningful impact on
learning, or on reducing poverty for the average Liberian, most
especially the children. This author believes that education is
pivotal in breaking the vicious cycle of poverty in Liberia and
especially the social exclusion that is the reality for many
children. The author is convinced that the role of education in
our society must be one of achieving universal primary education
and adult literacy.
