US
apologises over Gaddafi comments
Source: BBC
March 10, 2010
The
US State Department has apologised for comments made about
Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's call for jihad, or holy war,
against Switzerland.
Department spokesman PJ Crowley, who made the dismissive
comments, said they did not reflect US policy and were not
intended to offend. Col Gaddafi had criticised a Swiss vote
against the building of minarets and urged Muslims to boycott
the country. Mr Crowley described it as "lots of words, not
necessarily a lot of sense." Libya and Switzerland are embroiled
in a long-running diplomatic row. "I regret that my comments
have become an obstacle to further progress in our bilateral
relationship," Mr Crowley said.

Legislature, Labor Ministry Tussle Over Alien
Work Permit Fee
Courtesy: Liberian Observer
March 08, 2010
MONROVIA
– Labor Minister, Tiawon Gongloe, who has the statutory
responsibility over the country’s labor sector and related
activities on behalf of the Government of Liberia as prescribed
by a 1981 Act of the National Legislature, says his ministry has
the legal mandate to increase alien work permit fees without the
involvement of the Legislature. The Labor Ministry, whose
responsibility includes policy development and coordination,
regulating and monitoring of labor practices, enforcement of
labor laws and the promotion of best practices, maintains that
the Legislature, which is responsible for ‘making and amending
laws’, does not have the legal right to halt the increase in the
alien work permit fee.

‘Lofa Violence Was Planned, Country on Time Bomb’
Source: Liberian Observer
March 04, 2010
MONROVIA
– A Lofa County Senator has proposed that the violence that took
place in Lofa County over the weekend, leaving at least four
persons dead and several others injured, was premeditated.
On Tuesday, March 2, Sen.Sumo Kupee told the Senate Plenary, the
highest decision-making body of the Upper House, that the mêlée,
in which hundreds of people, including women and children, were
displaced, had been planned by some individuals.
The Lofa County Senator did not name the masterminds of the
violence but called for an independent probe into the incident.
Professor Kupee, who is also former Chairman of the Department
of Economics at the University of Liberia (UL), in his briefing
to the Senate, said the hostility, which, he said, involved
‘Muslims and Christians’, clearly showed that Liberia is on a
‘time bomb’.Read
An Open Letter to President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf
By: Bangalee Trawally
March 01, 2010
I
have the honor of writing to you to express my concern about the
seriousness of the land dispute in Ganta, Nimba County, which
developed as a result of Liberia’s civil war. This issue has the
potential of compromising your administration’s drive for peace,
justice, and good governance.
This is especially true in view of the lack of meaningful
progress on the part of your administration toward protecting
the rights of the Mandingo people, who are the victims in an
illegal and unacceptable appropriation of lands and houses by
people who have no legal claims to them whatsoever. It is
imperative that those properties be returned to their rightful
owners.

The

week in the central highland town of Gbarnga in Bong County,
concluded a merger agreement with the Liberia Action Party (LAP)
and the Liberia Unification Party (LUP). The three will become a
new Unity Party with symbols of LAP and LUP. With this gain up
President Sirleaf’s sleeves, she had no doubt that the road is
clear for her second reelection bid.
