Liberian Observer
April 7, 2009
A Chinese construction and investment giant, Hainan Century Investment Co Ltd, has arrived in the country with US$300 million for construction of 10,000 modern housing units.

At the moment, the Asian firm is building six of the up-to-the-minute housing units as samples along the Monrovia-Roberts International Airport (RIA) Highway.
According to the National Housing Authority (NHA), at least 1,000 of the 10,000 houses intended for use by low income earners and the middle class in Liberia would be constructed in Monrovia, the nation's Capital.

NHA Public Relations Officer Maxwell Davis, made the disclosure Saturday, April 4, 2009.
Mr. Davis pointed out that that funding for the housing project was secured by the current management of the NHA, headed by Stephen Neufville, the Housing Authority's Managing Director.

According to the NHA, the project seeks to provide homes for Liberians after years of armed conflict.

Scores of journalists over the weekend visited the site along the Monrovia-RIA Highway where samples of the housing units are currently under construction by both Chinese and Liberian building construction engineers.

The NHA management further disclosed that the housing facilities would be completed in a period of five years.

He gave assurance that the government of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf had already secured more than 15 acres on the RIA-Monrovia Highway for the 1,000 units for Monrovia.
According to Mr. Davis, the housing complex, when completed, will have supper markets, schools, hospitals as well as recreation centers for the benefit of residents of the community and its environs.

Construction work for the units will be carried out in collaboration with a Chinese housing expert, Hu Hongjiang, who is also the chief engineering supervisor for the project.

The journalists were led on a guided tour of the construction site by some NHA officials, including Director and Research Manager, Barlue Nagbe, Assistant Planning and Research Manager, William Nathan, and representatives of the Chinese firm.
